Close between second and third, but this feature hits all the right marks on a topical subject in Canadian society today. Kudos to Erin Haluschak of the CVR.

The News (Parksville/Qualicum Beach, BC)
Entry Title:
Heart-warming transplant tale
Entry Credit:
Mandy Moraes
Judge Comment:
Great artwork and subject matter when it comes to organ donation in Canada, with a man luckily found when a heart was found to replace his bad one (see the photo of him holding his original organ is memorable for him, and the reader). Kudos to Mandy Moraes of the PK/QB News.
Competition Comment:
A lot of features in this category from the big class lacked a feature hook — read more like a news story, especially with many starting on the front page. Bad layout and headline writing did not help with scoring. Need better artwork if you are selling a feature story, especially if the reporter's words are buried among advertising. The top-three really stand out, especially the winner from Chilliwack Progress, with reporter Jenna Hauck being assigned an obit story not on a former politicians or sports figure. Instead, she was able to give her BC readers a story on the bookstore feline - a meow moment for the CCNA winner of this class.
