  • Place Name: First Place
Contestant Name: The Carillon (Steinbach, MB)
Entry Title: Feds right to punish provinces for private health care billing
    Entry Credit: Greg Vandermeulen
Judge Comment: This is a great example of what a national editorial should be. The issue was national but the writer also made it relevant to the region and the local community. The writer had done the research so that the facts were clear and well presented. In a good use of facts, the writer was also able to debunk a lot of myths about the issue. The opinion was also presented clearly and the counter argument was also included.
  • Place Name: Second Place
Contestant Name: Alberni Valley News (Port Alberni, BC)
Entry Title: National health care strategy needed
    Entry Credit: Susie Quinn
Judge Comment: This was an excellent national editorial, made more impactful by a local event to introduce the subject. The writer did a good job of linking a local visit by a politician to a national issue on an issue that is clearly relevant to all Canadians The argument and call to action was very clear on an issue that impacts all Canadians and the use of data added to its impact.
  • Place Name: Third Place
Contestant Name: Nunatsiaq News (Nunavut/Nunavik, NU)
Entry Title: Muted interest in coronation hints at relationship reset
    Entry Credit: Corey Larocque
Judge Comment: This was a very powerful editorial, as it challenged the prevailing views about the relationship between the crown and indigenous leaders. Well researched, well written and thought provoking. It is an issue that is relevant to all Canadians, but particularly resonates in the north. It is great when editorial writers point out these important issues.
  • Competition Comment: All of the entries were great examples of impressive national editorials. What put the winners ahead was when they used a local event or issue to frame the national one. It made the message more powerful. It was also impressive to see writers had made the effort to research the issue to back up their arguments. Very impressive all around.
