  • Competition Comment: Congratulations to the winners for providing excellent publications to read! Your communities are lucky to have you! A few points overall about the submissions: • ensure you use CP style, and proper grammar and punctuation • don't write in the passive voice • tell a story — don't give readers a transcript • ensure your photos are fresh and have appropriate cutlines and credits • add more white space around the design elements • use a right ragged format for columns • eliminate the word "local" as it's redundant; state the municipality's name instead • make sure your columnists and letter writers come from your community • be sure there is space in your publication for letters to the editor and other community voices (especially from the marginalized) • include creative sections (e.g., Beefs and Bouquets, seniors outreach or holiday guides), when possible • help the reader with navigational elements (i.e., page turns, clear sections like for arts, business and sports) • avoid anonymous bylines • update/refresh your banner; it may be a tired look for your readers • refrain from going over the 60/40 rule for ads/editorial
