Contestant Name: Pique Newsmagazine (Whistler & Pemberton, BC)
Entry Title: What's in the Water?
    Entry Credit: Elizabeth McDonald
Judge Comment: "Pique" does remarkable in-depth work, always look forward to their submissions. This piece really looks at all angles of water and watershed management, and tackles it in an easy-to-read manner. Excellent work.
  • Place Name: Second Place
Contestant Name: Castlegar News (Castlegar, BC)
Entry Title: From Castlegar to Ukraine: April Huggett talks about 18 months in the war zone
    Entry Credit: Betsy Kline
Judge Comment: Some layout issues and confusing word choices made this piece stumble a teeny bit, but the story being told shone through these hiccups. Well done.
  • Place Name: Third Place
Contestant Name: Pique Newsmagazine (Whistler & Pemberton, BC)
Entry Title: Winter (cycle) is coming
    Entry Credit: Vince Shuley
Judge Comment: The topic of winter cycling is a bit niche, but it fits perfectly in this area of Canada, and this piece leaves no piece of ice or snow unturned in its quest to lay it all out there and perhaps earn converts! Great layout, too.
  • Competition Comment: This was a fun category to judge, and there wasn't a piece that wasn't engaging and not easy to read. Those submitting to a features category would do well to review what a feature is, however. There were a few too many pieces that didn't fit the bill, as they were either transcribed long interviews, or a specific person's story. Everyone has a story, but not every one is feature-worthy. To be a feature, stories need context, they need to be linked to the news somehow, they need to go behind the scenes, they need to provide a fuller picture of a situation. Features offer the chance to dig deep into a topic, and should give the reader something to really chew on.
