Judge Comment: The writing is clear, descriptive and focuses on solution-based journalism. Layout is neat. The scope of coverage using expert opinions added to the richness of the content. Overall, it is a well-written piece with details and solution-based approach to contribute to increasing the local journalism initiative, which helps a reader learn and be prepared moving forward.
  • Place Name: Second Place
Contestant Name: Peace Arch News (Surrey, BC)
Entry Title: Stabbings spark fear in waterfront community
Entry Credit: Tricia Weel, Sobia Moman, Alex Browne
Judge Comment: Great work on covering the details, getting the messages/emotions across and ensuring a variety of perspectives are covered. However, adding pictures to break down the texts in emotion heavy stories helps the reader stay connected and interested to finish what they began reading. Great work on getting through the overall message, and how the community feels about the incidents. While views of other leaders of the community the victims belonged to could have been considered, the overall variety of voices covered in the society and the details about the incidents and events that followed in response to the incidents, added greatly to the thorough coverage.
  • Place Name: Third Place
Contestant Name: Saanich News (Saanich, BC)
Entry Title: VIDEO: Fire crews battle massive Saanich blaze amid high winds
Entry Credit: Christine van Reeuwyk, Ben Fenlon, Olivier Laurin
Judge Comment: Great work in covering the breaking news from various angles. Though more effort in taking a solution-based approach in covering such incidents would help add more to the stories from a reader's perspective and focusing on small technicalities would also help enhance the quality of the work. The writing is creative and goes in depth of the incidents. The layout in print was great. Digital articles had a lot of scope in terms of how the text could have been broken down with images from the fire scene. The cover photo of the two ladies with the dog (even though it seems it was staged for the camera) looks great! It adds to the context later discussed in detail within the article.
