  • Place Name: First Place
Contestant Name: Rocky Mountain Outlook (Canmore/Kananaskis/Banff)
    Entry Title: First goal
    Entry Credit: Jungmin Ham
Judge Comment: Being in the right place at the right time garnered first-place in the best news feature photo category for Rocky Mountain House Outlook (AB) photographer Jungmin Ham, who was in the corner when Canmore Eagles forward Kayden Rawji scored his first AJHL goal. The look on Rawji's face tells the newspaper readers how excited he was at that emotional moment for him in the game.
  • Place Name: Second Place
Contestant Name: The Haldimand Press (Haldimand County, ON)
    Entry Title: Congratulations Doris
    Entry Credit: Tamara Botting
Judge Comment: Imagine graduating at age 100? A momentous occasion Haldimand Press (ON) photographer Tamara Botting captured outside the high school, with Doris Young standing and throwing her grad cap in the direction of the photographer. A memorable moment for the student celebrating her graduation.
  • Place Name: Third Place
Contestant Name: Shootin' the Breeze (Pincher Creek, AB)
Entry Title: There's nothing on our street where the agony is
    Entry Credit: Shannon Peace
Judge Comment: During a ceremony, an emotive image of former Piikani Nations chief/elder Peter Strikes With a Gun was captured by Shootin' the Breeze (Pincher Creek, AB) photographer Shannon Peace. Nice use of drop quote into the photo, played large on the front page.
  • Competition Comment: Think about what goes into a news feature photo, when deciding to submit your entry: It must contain emotion, expression of interest, creativity, with good exposure, composition and reproduction. Preference when it comes to scoring high marks out of 50 were given to story-telling images which demonstrate excellent news judgment. This was evident in the top-five submissions out of 24, with the top-three judged a point behind each other. Remember the technical and pagination process when it comes to marks, so play photos big, fill the frame, and be observant of cropping. Cutline information matters, too, so ensure there's good information for the reader perusing your photo. Think active versus inactive when covering an unplanned event where a news feature photo might be found when you focus on your coverage, whether it makes front page or is played big inside your publication. Kudos to Jungmin Ham and his hockey celebration used in the Rocky Mountain Outlook (AB) to earn first-place bragging rights. Tamara Botting with the Haldimand Press (ON) earned runner-up honours thanks to image of 100-year-old Doris Young celebrating her high graduation, her grad cap tossed towards the camera. Third-place winner with an emotive capture of elder Peter Strikes With a Gun during a ceremony is Shannon Peace, who works out of Pincher Creek (AB) with the Shootin' the Breeze.
