Perfection for the St. Albert Gazette when it came to photographer Bruce Edwards and layout artist creating his photo essay, with plenty of active action from the rodeo arena. Great use of white space by using an array of sizes. Fill the frame eased the layout process.

Judge Comment:
Nice combination of ground and air photos telling the story of this aerial show by Chilliwack Progress photographer Jenna Hauck. Excellent use of white space as photographer/layout artist combined their efforts for this photo essay. Always look at your coverage area from 360 degrees and different perspectives, and use of lens, to focus on telling your story.

Entry Title:
Herring run frenzy
Entry Credit:
Michael Briones
Judge Comment:
Kudos to Michael Briones with the Parksville/Qualicum News for his focus on the annual herring run, a frenzied event involving the fleet of fishing boats out on the ocean off Vancouver Island. Nice use of the layout space, with the photographs used. Just needed an image of herring up close to give the reader an idea of what his fish looks like.
Competition Comment:
It was an easy chore judging the 15 entries in this category, with the top-five submissions standing out from the rest. A rodeo essay from the St. Albert Gazette (AB) prevailed with a perfect score, followed by the Chilliwack Progress (BC) covering an aerial show as runner-up and Parksville/Qualicum News (BC) in third after sharing a story about the annual herring run off the coast of Vancouver Island. Use of white space, catchy captions, placement of cutlines, and cropping all combined to score high points. Team effort between photographer and who is responsible for pagination. Plus, the combined photographs used during layout told a story. Moreover, the photographers filled the frame and provided active photos versus inactive images. Remember, you are telling a story with your photo essay. Remember to establish the layout with a strong anchor photograph, then build around it.
