  • Place Name: First Place
Contestant Name: The Lake Report (Niagara-on-the-Lake, ON)
Entry Title: Close maskless school now
    Entry Credit: Richard Harley
Judge Comment: This had everything a local editorial should have. It was well written, well researched and called out a glaring problem in a community. What was especially good was that it built on the papers expose and research on the issue that was in the edition. It also called out more than one body for their lack of action.
  • Place Name: Second Place
Contestant Name: North Shore News (North/West Vancouver, BC)
    Entry Title: No. 1 Priority
    Entry Credit: Jane Seyd
Judge Comment: A powerful local editorial pointing out a big oversight by a local authority. Well and amusingly written with a clear message. The community was hopefully much better served as a result.
  • Place Name: Third Place
    Contestant Name: Observer (Elmira-Woolwich, ON)
Entry Title: Development charges and an addiction to growth
    Entry Credit: Steve Kannon
Judge Comment: This was a well argued and researched editorial that highlighted the short sightedness of an issue and how development charges can be a long term problem. An important issue for the community and one that isn't often discussed.
  • Competition Comment: This category truly shows newspapers at their best; holding decision makers to account on behalf of their communities. Each of the entries pointed out a real challenge facing a local community, in many cases pointing out a lack of accountability or a bad decision made by those in power. The best ones honed in on a solution. In an age where we are told how cynical everyone is about public discourse it is refreshing to see such passion and emotion about our communities. This category and the entries show how important local news outlets are to democracy and accountability.
