  • Competition Comment: Canadian Community Newspapers are clearly serving their communities with terrific sports coverage. These entries were extremely close. Simply, no one would cover these stories if these reporters were not on the beat. Audiences are richly invested in sports. There was also an impressive amount of original photography by reporters and photographers. This category might give more weighting to original photography in the future given the extra effort and work required. There was a strong bias in this category for men's sports and young men's sports. In terms of serving the community the coverage seemed a bit lopsided. Therefore I tended to weight entries that included a bit broader range of coverage of women's sports and some athletes of older ages a bit higher. This was a judging preference in terms of recognizing the scope that was required for the category. The news organizations know their audiences best. Once again, the sports reporting was strong across the category and entries were very, very close.
