Spring's kiss

Judge Comment:
Cuteness overload, nice composition and placement on front page. Lots of colour. Naturalness of the child, not posing her. Top of the class as a feature photo!

The World-Spectator (Moosomin, SK)
Entry Title:
Rodeo sunset scene
Entry Credit:
Kevin Weedmark
Judge Comment:
Might have scored higher, but the composition was hurt by the street lights. Nice use of backlighting, and seeing the visual at sunset. Would make a great calendar front page in the community.

Third Place
Contestant Name:
The Macleod Gazette (Fort Macleod, AB)
Entry Title:
DANCE SHOWCASE
Entry Credit:
Frank McTighe
Judge Comment:
While the "darkroom lighting" took off a few marks, that's what the photographer had to work with yet grabbed a great dance action shot on the stage. Had to draw on their tech skills to make it work.
Competition Comment:
Think about your composition and cropping — fill the frame — when out looking for feature photos while covering your community. Sport action coverage is not feature photography, so put those images in the right category. If your editor is stuck on just using horizontal pics in a skinny space, forcing bad cropping on your visual, try to encourage them to lay the photograph out in a vertical space. Overall, work your photo assignments when it comes to feature photography ... look at the scene 360 degrees, not just what's in front of you. Have fun, and try to avoid setting up posed photographs. Let things happen.
