  • Place Name: First Place
Contestant Name: Langley Advance Times (Langley, BC)
    Entry Title: Trail of Deceit
    Entry Credit: Matthew Claxton
Judge Comment: This series shows true initiative. While these sorts of finance-related stories can be challenging to read, Matthew Claxton manages to keep readers engaged and following the story — and the money — and with interesting graphics as well.
  • Place Name: Second Place
Contestant Name: Barrie Advance (Barrie, ON)
Entry Title: Aging Strong in Simcoe County
Entry Credit: Brett Glover, Janis Ramsay, Adam Martin-Robbins
Judge Comment: This is a comprehensive and extremely helpful series on maintaining health as one ages. The reporters talked to several different people and brought in relevant local and global statistics and information.
  • Place Name: Third Place
Contestant Name: St. Albert Gazette (St. Albert, AB)
Entry Title: War in Ukraine-One year later
    Entry Credit: Kevin Ma
Judge Comment: A well-written, well-structured series about Ukrainian refugee issues in St. Albert, Alberta, with a separate focus for each article, and quality photos too.
  • Competition Comment: A solid feature series should show evidence of forethought and initiative, and each story in the series should focus mainly on one aspect of the overall topic. Several entries in this category were simply stories about the same hard news subject written at different times of year. Doing in-depth work through a feature series format — and including strong photos, graphics and layout — can have so much more impact on the communities we serve. The top-three winners and a few others succeeded in having that impact.
