Entry Title: Lake Report sports coverage 2023
Entry Credit: Somer Slobodian, Evan Loree, Kevin MacLean
Judge Comment: Nice cross-section of community sports. More space to tell the stories and showcase action photos.
  • Place Name: Third Place
Contestant Name: Nanaimo News Bulletin (Nanaimo, BC)
Entry Title: CFL star getting ready for two seasons at once
    Entry Credit: Greg Sakaki
Judge Comment: Provide more space for community sports coverage ... more athlete stories, versus game result stories. Let the dailies do the latter.
  • Competition Comment: What's happened to community sports coverage? Easy to choose the winner, as St. Albert Gazette is like the cream, always comes to the top wth its submissions. More action photos, not relying on submitted team photos. Because you are community newspaper, tell stories with features, not game result stories which can be done by the daily newspapers. Sports is just as important in a community as covering city hall or your provincial/federal politicians. High school sports offer a plethora of stories and feature writing opportunities. JSX
