Competition Comment:
It was a great pleasure and honour to judge the best Canadian papers in the 17,500 and over circulation classification - General Excellence category. COVID-19 has made a difficult time in the industry even harder, however, it was clear that some provinces and areas endured greater challenges with their content than others. One standout paper shone brighter than all others – Surrey Now Leader. This paper was a pleasure to read from cover to cover! Right from their front page to their news section “engage,” to their editorial page, through their entertainment and arts section “Go” to their local sports section, the staff at this paper are to be commended for a job well done. As an added bonus, I also enjoyed their “Next Gen” section, celebrating Surry’s youth. In my opinion, the layout and design of this paper is the best of the seventeen entries – a pleasure to read! The extra pages of content allow the paper to breath, and the readers of Surrey have a great community paper to call their own! For papers in the competition on the tighter side (a lot of ad pages), I would not be afraid to open your papers up a bit (yes you can do that!). Your readers and advertisers will thank you.
