Competition Comment:
Spot news photography is typically one of the toughest parts of journalism. It is unpredictable, it can be emotional, and there’s the pressure of capturing heightened action, among other things. In most of these entries, the photographer needs to either get closer or use a longer lens to bring the scene closer. Tighter cropping can help a bit as well. When there are people in the foreground, or otherwise in the scene, your images will usually have more emotion and impact: a lone firefighter versus the billowing flames for example. People figuring prominently usually add a lot of perspective and dimensionality, as in the top three images here.
