It is difficult to take photos at night, much less photos with impact. This photo is well composed, and is much more technically difficult than it appears. Another great job well done!

North Shore News (North/West Vancouver, BC)
Entry Title:
Crews halt wildfire near Horseshoe Bay
Entry Credit:
Paul McGrath
Judge Comment:
This photo does an excellent job of illustrating the magnitude of this fire and the efforts to fight it. It is well composed, which is not always easy when subjects, such as the plane, are in motion.
Competition Comment:
Everyone who entered should be commended for their effort, initiative and skill.
There are some points to bear in mind when taking spot news photos, and photos of any kind. Photos have a greater impact with people in them, which is enhanced even more with faces. Faces in particular convey emotion and feeling. They are also enhanced by having names attached to them. People want to read about the people in their community.
Overall, the composition of virtually all the entries was good too. What set the winners apart was the actual impact the photos had.
Everyone did a great job.
